A. B. Shetty Memorial Institute of Dental Sciences was founded in the year 1985 and is a constituent unit of Nitte University and is recognised by the Dental Council of India. The institute is affiliate of Okoyama University Dental School, Japan and is among the handful of elite institutions outside the UK to be recognised as a centre for training for specific courses by the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburg, England.
