Government Medical College Srinagar was established in the year 1959 and is affiliated to Kashmir University. The college is one of the oldest medical colleges in Independent India and was counted among the top 5 medical institutions in India, for many decades. The college is affiliated to the University of Kashmir. The college is mainly concerned with imparting Health and Medical Education, and there are several hospitals, associating the College.

The candidate should have secured minimum of 50% marks in 10+2 examination with subjects Physics, Chemistry and Biology, from a recognized Board. Students are admitted purely on the basis of Merit obtained in the Common Entrance Examination. The examination is held by the Board of Professional Entrance Examination once every year.
